![]() Now, I am not going to sit here and pretend that Veer-Zaara isn’t overly fluffy, cliched, and repeats all the tropes that are synonymous with the romance genre. By the time the credits rolled I was an emotional mess and till this day I thank them for compelling me to watch the movie. However, I was unaware of all this because back in 2004 I was a kid in Siliguri being dragged to the nearest theater by grandparents who were Shah Rukh Khan fans. According to Aditya, Veer-Zaara was a medium for Yash to go back to his Punjab roots and pay tribute to the oneness of people on both sides of the border. So, Yash Chopra took on the role despite being as nervous as he was during his directing debut, Dhool Ka Phool. Soon after that Aditya Chopra came up with a script that Yash finalised but conveyed that he won’t direct. So, the behind-the-scenes story of Veer-Zaara goes something like this: Yash Chopra was incredibly pissed off with the kind of films Bollywood was making during that time. That’s when Yash Chopra brought his 7-year-long break from directing movies to an end and gifted me Veer-Zaara (Come on, I like to think that that was the case because I love his movies!) Amazon Prime ![]() ![]() Everything started to look repetitive, over-the-top, contrived, sugar-coated and just plain old boring. However, on the flipside, I started developing a sense of disdain for the genre. Now, growing up, I noticed that a whole lot of their target audience gave in to this trend and turned the stars acting in those movies into literal gods. But, admit it, most of the roster is filled with romance. Yes, there are thrillers, dramas and comedy movies here and there. Romance is hard to miss when you’re living in India and surrounded by Bollywood movies.
